Ozone expected to reach dangerous levels in London today

The Mayor of London has issued an air pollution warning today (August 7) as the capital experiences dangerous levels of ozone pollution due to high temperatures.

Temperatures are expected to reach 36 degrees Celcius in London today, this strong sunshine and high temperatures provide the perfect conditions to promote the formation of ground-level ozone as imported and local pollutants react in the sunshine.

The Government’s Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollution (COMPEAP) has advised that adults and children with lung or heart problems should reduce strenuous physical exertion, particularly outdoors.

They have also advised that people with asthma may need to use their inhaler more often.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: ‘Air pollutants are reacting with the strong sunshine we are experiencing today leading to high levels of ozone pollution.

‘For that reason, I am issuing a ‘high’ air pollution alert for tomorrow. This means people with heart and lung problems and particularly those displaying COVID-19 symptoms should avoid physical exertion.’
