Calor to showcase alternative fuels at 2018 Freight Expo

Gas supplier Calor is set to showcase its alternative fuels at the 2018 Freight in the City Expo in London next month.

Taking place on 6 November at Alexandra Palace, Calor will be promoting how its fuels–including liquefied natural gas (LNG) and BioLPG made from waste and renewable vegetable oil–offer a low-carbon option for hauliers operating in clean air and low emissions zones.

The importance of reducing vehicle emissions has come into sharp focus in recent months with the launch of the government’s Road to Zero Strategy, published in July 2018. The strategy provides a route map towards ending the sale of conventional petrol and diesel only cars and vans by 2040 (see airqualitynews.com story ).

Calor said that it products offered “economical and efficient” alternatives to conventional fuels, without impacting on a vehicle’s performance.

BioLPG

According to Calor, vehicles can run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) alongside diesel if they undergo a simple conversion to dual fuel technology. The company claims that LPG is lower carbon than other fossil fuels, and if replaced with BioLPG–which is chemically identical–hauliers could achieve further carbon dioxide savings of between 50-80%.

Meanwhile the company says that LNG also has many advantages. The fuel does not take up much space, which Calor says make it ideally suited to long-haul HGVs. Vehicles run on this fuel are also much quieter than those powered by diesel, meaning they can still operate in inner-city areas where noise restrictions may apply.

Calor currently operates the UK’s largest network of LNG refuelling stations and said that many manufacturers, including Volvo Trucks, Iveco and Scania, were now choosing to fuel their vehicles with LNG. For example, Volvo’s new gas-powered truck features a 460hp engine and is capable of delivering 20 per cent less CO2 than a regular Volvo FM truck (see airqualitynews.com story). The LNG-fuelled vehicle will also be at the 2018 Expo, opposite Calor’s stand.

Mark Gilks, transport specialist at Calor, said: “Our alternative gas solutions emit substantially less CO2 emissions than conventional fuels such as diesel, while also producing significantly less harmful particulates, such as NOx and SOx.

“However, it’s not just the fuels’ green credentials that is driving growth in the freight market. Competitively-priced and efficient, the ease of switching from diesel to gas is making BioLPG and LNG an attractive proposition to UK hauliers. With the right infrastructure in place to support its uptake too, our message at Freight in the City 2018 is a simple one: for the freight market, gas is here for the long haul.
