Free electric taxi rides for NHS workers

BP Chargemaster is providing support to electric taxis who are transporting NHS workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

UK taxi apps, FREE NOW and Gett, have created a special booking option for NHS workers.

The apps are offering a reduced fare for the workers, allowing them to get to hospitals quickly and at a lower cost.

NHS members can download the taxi apps, enter a pick-up and drop-off location. Then when the taxi arrives if they present their NHS photo ID, the payment will be taken directly via the app and a full £10 fare will go directly to the driver.

BP Chargemaster is supporting these initiatives by providing charging credit for electric taxi drivers who are participating in the scheme.

Electric taxi drivers can claim £30 credit. In total this could add the equivalent credit of over one million miles of journeys.

The taxi drivers can redeem this credit against electricity costs on their Polar Plus account, the credit will enable them cheaper access to more than 7,000 public charging points across the UK.

Vandana Prashar, head of operations at FREE NOW said: ‘Black cabs have a strong history of helping in times of crisis, having acted as ambulances in WWI, supported firefighters during the Blitz as well as more recently taking people to safety during terror attacks.

‘We are delighted to be able to launch the ‘NHS Heroes’ option to connect NHS workers to the best taxi service in the world, enabling staff to get to work quickly and safely so they can deliver vital treatment to patients.

‘It is a testament to black cab drivers that they are willing to step up yet again, even when their earnings are taking a hit in these uncertain times to keep London moving.’

In related news, following government advice to stay indoors, the car-pooling app Faxi will use its software to help vulnerable people to get the supplies that they need.

Those who are in need of support can go onto the app and find a nearby driver, message them and arrange the help they need to ensure they can keep supplied.

This is a really cool initiative. We’ve been helping NHS heroes in our own way down here in Devon – still 50% off for them with our company (https://tavistocktaxis.co.uk) and we’re proud of that because it doesn’t cost a lot, but it means a lot! Hoping to electrify our fleet soon too
