First look: Inside the Air Quality News February 2023 transport special

The first issue of Air Quality News in 2023 has been published, and with it our latest special report on transport, travel and air pollution. You can read the full digital version below.

Throughout the pages you’ll find insight, news and investigations into some of the biggest challenges currently facing policymakers, industry leaders and the public in terms of cleaning up what we all breath.

The future of flight is one example. Georgie Hughes investigates how scientists are making some inroads on the path to overcoming a huge obstacle in terms of our world turning net zero — sustainable and low carbon aviation fuel. As you’ve probably guessed, though, the journey ahead still looks long, winding, and difficult. 

Back on solid ground, Oxford’s cutting edge EV technologies are presented in all their glory. The city, famous for its university and endless list of laureates and Nobel Prize winners, is trialling  prototypes that could help plug-in vehicles become a possibility for more people, including those without driveways.

The same corner of England is also now home to Europe’s largest vehicle charging hub, so we take a look at, too. Elsewhere, our international feature hones in on innovations from the Netherlands facilitating air quality measuring on bicycles. Suffice to say, this has major implications for the quality and quantity of data available on what we’re breathing in. But sadly, it’s not all good news ahead.

Emily Whitehouse considers how community bodies can hope to take on large organisations in cases like this.
