Christopher Hammond, Chief Executive UK100

Christopher Hammond is the Chief Executive for UK100. UK100 is a cross-party membership organisation that supports the most ambitious councils in going further and faster on their Net Zero and Clean Air targets.

Under his leadership, UK100 successfully campaigned for community energy to be written into the Great British Energy Bill, won the Utility Week Strategic Partnership Award with UK Power Networks DSO, and had its local climate engagement work recognised as a national exemplar in the government’s first-ever public participation strategy for the energy transition. Previously, Christopher served as the elected leader of Southampton City Council from 2018 to 2021.

Dr Carl Desouza, Centre for Low Emission Construction

Carl is a post doctoral research associate at the Centre for Low Emission Construction (CLEC), which is part of the Aerosol Science Team, in the Environmental Research Group. Research includes measurements of real-world emissions from machines used in the construction sector, development of emission inventories, and potential government policies. Carl’s research aims to raise awareness of the impact of dust and emissions on local air quality & health across the construction industry, by conducting real-world emissions and worker exposure measurements across active construction sites.

Dr Laura Horsfall, University College London

A researcher at the UCL Institute of Health Informatics, Laura has led studies investigating the use of wood burners in England and Wales. Her work revealed “wood burning hotspots” and linked increased lung cancer rates in affluent areas to potential carcinogen exposure from wood smoke. In May 2025, her analysis of energy performance certificates found a significant rise in the number of homes installing wood burners since 2022, especially in rural areas.

Dr Jim McQuaid

Jim McQuaid is based at the University of Leeds and has been involved in atmospheric observations for over 25 years. His research spans Saharan dust, cloud responses to warming, and aerosol impacts on Greenland’s surface. Recently, he has focused on low-cost sensors to monitor PM2.5 and helped create the UK’s largest network outside London, in collaboration with Leeds City Council. He’s also led deployments in Indonesia to track peatland fire pollution. Committed to public engagement, he works with schools and communities, and in 2023, created the Air Quality Stripes to communicate global PM2.5 trends since 1850.

Jayda David, LIVE + BREATHE
