Beryl unveil next generation shared e-bike

UK-based shared transport operator, Beryl, has launched a new lightweight electric bike, the BBE2

The company describe it as ‘the culmination of a well-established feedback loop between riders and Local Authorities, in-house mechanics, and the Beryl design team.’

Beryl are currently operating 16 schemes, which have seen riders make over 25 million trips in the five years they have been operating.

Of the new bike, Phil Ellis, CEO and Co-Founder of Beryl said: ‘We are incredibly proud to have unveiled our new e-bike. It is the culmination of years of our own technological development, and our experience running successful bike and e-scooter schemes across the country.

‘There are too many poor quality, heavy and single-geared shared bikes out there and it means cycling is not reaching its potential as a mode of transport. Shared bike schemes are key to unlocking increased levels of cycling, and we have ensured every element of our new model is equipped for a wide range of riders. We can’t wait to see them out on the road, and continuing to expand our work in both England and into Europe.’

The BBE2 features a controller with Bluetooth, GSM, and GPS. The bike has internal drum brakes to provide safe braking on all terrains and comes with broad-rimmed 23-inch wheels and puncture-resistant tyres to provide better grip and a reliable ride.

A 2-speed gear ,hub provides automatic gear shifting, enabling riders of any ability to always be in the right gear. This is particularly important when moving away from traffic lights on busy roads.

It is also equipped with the company’s proprietary Laserlight, a powerful front light with laser projection technology and the ‘Burner Brake’, a red rear brake with braking detection.

The bike has been designed with the aim of feeling more like the sort of bike people might have at home, with improved ergonomics such as a low-step through frame and an adjustable seat clamp meaning it can be ridden by riders from 4’11 through to 6’5, and there is a front basket with a 10kg capacity.

The BBE2  has a rear wheel electronic hub lock to prevent theft, comes with a swappable 36V battery which provides a 80 km range and a Near Field Communication (NFC) unlocking pad with an integrated phone holder.
