For the first time, saving money is set to overtake environmental concerns as the main reason UK homeowners choose electric vehicles, a shift that could reshape the wider appeal of clean technology.
According to new data from Electrify Research’s Homeowner Electrification Tracker Study (HETS), the percentage of homeowners citing financial and economic benefits of EV ownership has surged 17 points since August 2023, rising from 26% to 43%.
Over the same period, environmental associations have fallen from around 60% to approximately 46%. The crossover is projected to occur early next year.
The findings are based on 44,000 unprompted interviews across 11 waves of research, meaning respondents answered in their own words rather than choosing from a list. This approach sets out to capture genuine perceptions rather than socially desirable responses.
Ben Marks, MD of Electrify Research said: ‘This is not a blip. It’s not really that the environmental case for BEVs has weakened, it’s just become displaced – less ‘top of mind’ – as consumers start to appreciate the financial benefits of ownership. For everyone in the auto industry this data should prompt a serious rethink. It’s a structural change. At the very least it should be reflected in messaging, but the true implications are strategic rather than tactical.’
Electrify Research claim this has implications far beyond car sales, insisting that as financial thinking takes hold, the addressable EV market is expected to broaden significantly, moving beyond wealthier early adopters into more price-sensitive segments. This, in turn, could accelerate adoption of other green technologies: previous Electrify Research found that owning an EV increases homeowner consideration for heat pumps by 69% and for solar by 40%.
With running costs and tariff positioning set to outperform green messaging as a commercial lever, the transition to electric mobility may finally be shifting from an environmental choice to an economic no-brainer.
Ben Nelmes, CEO of New AutoMotive concluded: ‘More motorists are realising just how much they could save by going electric. What is good for the planet is good for your pocket, and the amount you can save by going electric has increased over 20% in the last month as global fuel prices rise. And with more models at better prices than ever before, there has never been a better time to get an electric car.’
