Car manufacturers Nissan, Renault and Vauxhall have joined Citroën in having electric vehicles that qualify for the Electric Car Grant scheme.
The three newly announced brands have, between them, 13 models which will quality for a £1,500 discount, on top of the four Citroën models announced last week. The full list of models is at the bottom of the page.
The Electric Car Grant has two bands. The ‘most sustainably produced cars’ will qualify for Band 1 and buyers will enjoy a discount of £3,750.
To qualify for Band 2 and a £1,500 discount, cars must meet ‘some environmental criteria’. The minimum of which is that manufacturers hold a verified science based target.
All car models qualifying for the grant so far have been in Band 2. but the absence of the Nissan Leaf from the recently announced models hints that it might quality for the largest possible discount.
Car buyers need do nothing to enjoy the new savings as carmakers apply discounts at the point of sale for new eligible EVs.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: ‘With discounts on seventeen car models announced this week alone, we’re delivering on our promise to make it easier and cheaper for families to go electric.
‘This is about backing drivers, putting money back into people’s pockets and creating the jobs and growth that will drive Britain forward, delivering on our Plan for Change.’
The latest announcement comes after Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said that more certainty was needed to drive EV demand.
Speaking at the end of last week, he said: ‘New car demand stalled, with the market posting its weakest July since 2022 and more moderate EV growth compared with the recent trend. This is, however, expected to be a short-term softening, with the market’s sensitivity to external factors heightened by the gap between the announcement of the Electric Car Grant (ECG) and full details of the models that will qualify – a gap which has, inevitably, led to a pause in purchasing decisions.’
