A new fully electric thermoplastic road marking truck, believed to be the first of its kind in the world, has been unveiled, offering a sustainable alternative for road marking operations.
Manufactured by the WJ Group, one of the UK’s leading providers of road marking and highway safety services, the truck is designed to operate for a full shift on a single charge.
With an investment of approximately £500,000 behind it, WJ launched the vehicle at the LCRIG Innovation Festival as part of the group’s wider efforts to reach net zero in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2032.
The truck’s method of applying low-carbon thermoplastic road markings is also zero emission, aligning with growing demand for greener solutions from highways authorities.
The truck was developed using an Iveco glider chassis, modified in collaboration with Electra Commercial Vehicles. Key adaptations include a lightweight aluminium structure to improve efficiency and an electric heating system designed to replace traditional gas burners, ensuring thermoplastic materials reach and maintain optimal application temperatures.
Additional features include electric applicator prams that help maintain consistent temperature during installation.
The vehicle is currently in its final design phase, with testing and deployment planned in the near future. It represents a significant advancement in electric fleet technology for highway maintenance, aligning with broader industry goals for sustainability and decarbonisation.
Wayne Johnston, CEO at WJ Group, said: ‘By launching the world’s first fully electric thermoplastic road marking truck, we are offering a completely new and innovative solution to help our industry partners keep sustainability at the heart of their decisions.
‘Combined with our thermoplastic road marking products using bio-based binders, councils can significantly reduce their emissions in line with their own net zero timelines.
‘Our EV Truck is the first step towards a fully electric fleet – eliminating the need for fossil fuel powered equipment. I’m proud that we are leading the industry towards a cleaner, brighter tomorrow.’
