Enterprise and Greenwich partner for EV car club

Greenwich council and car rental firm Enterprise have partnered to trial an electric car club in the borough.

As part of the scheme, car-sharing provider Enterprise will offer its members in Greenwich access to one of two Nissan Leaf fully electric cars located in the Greenwich and the Peninsula Low Emission Neighbourhood.

Up to seven Nissan Leafs will be available in the Greenwich LEN

A further five electric vehicles will soon become available at fixed charging bays, also around the LEN area, according to Enterprise.

The vehicles are available at all time and are priced from a minimum of £6.20 per hour, which includes VAT and insurance, and five pence per mile including recharges.

The Nissan Leafs have a battery life of more than 90 miles and can be charged at any Source London charging site around the capital.

Councillor Denise Scott McDonald, cabinet member for air quality, public realm and transport, Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “We are delighted that Royal Greenwich is leading the way in encouraging residents to find cleaner, more efficient ways of travel. Electric cars are a great way of getting around town.

“If any driver is thinking about trading in their vehicles for an electric car, this scheme is the perfect way of seeing if an electric vehicle will work for you.”

Low Emission Neighbourhood

The Low Emission Neighbourhood (LEN) is a scheme set up by Royal Greenwich and part funded by the GLA.

It is focused on improving air quality in the Greenwich West and Peninsula wards using a mixture of ‘smart technology’ and other techniques to reduce transport emissions and make the area more people-friendly.

The electric car club in the LEN is a two-year pilot. If successful it will be rolled out across the borough.

In August 2017 the authority launched an incentive scheme to encourage walking and cycling as part of its efforts to combat air pollution.

Dan Gursel, managing director of Enterprise Car Club, said: “We see this electric vehicle as part of how Enterprise is assisting local authorities in achieving their targets. It will provide exceptional insight on how car clubs and rental can enable more environmentally friendly motoring and is part of how councils can improve air quality in major cities up and down the UK.

“For Enterprise Car Club, this as an important step towards our goal of achieving a 50 per cent Ultra Low Emission Vehicle fleet in London by 2025.”
