Sainsbury’s trials zero emissions engine

Technology company Dearman has announced its first liquid nitrogen powered “zero emission” transport engine has gone on trial with supermarket group, Sainsbury’s.

Dearman has confirmed the engine will soon be ready for trying out on test runs to stores across London.

The company claims the engine will save 1.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is the equivalent of a car driving 14,500km.

Toby Peters, Dearman’s founder and chief executive, said: “Demand for cooling is increasing worldwide and new technologies are urgently needed to ensure that growth can be achieved sustainably. The Dearman system is one such technology, and alongside our partners, we’re proud to be debuting it with Sainsbury’s, a company renowned for their respect for the environment.”

Sainsbury’s has revealed the deal is a part of the company’s commitment to reduce absolute carbon emissions by 30% between 2005 and 2020.

Paul Crewe, head of sustainability for Sainsbury’s, said: “As one of Britain’s biggest retailers we really recognise the importance of reducing emissions, which is why we’re working hard to cut carbon emissions by 30% between 2005 and 2020.

“This trial with Dearman is just one of the innovations we’ve introduced to help us towards this goal. Their zero-emission system is really exciting, to be running a liquid air engine quite literally means our cooling system is running on thin air.”

Saved

Dearman claims 37kg of nitrogen oxides and 2kg of particulate matter will be saved, compared to a similar diesel system.

Air Products provided Dearman with the liquid nitrogen, which is a non-flammable solution and the road infrastructure.

John Trembley, Air Products’ cryogenic technology manager, said: “The global demand for sustainable performance, which improves energy efficient and emissions, whilst addressing social needs is very real.

“Strong partnerships that enable customers to grow responsibly through environmentally-focused opportunities are critical; this project is a living example of what can be achieved through creative, expert thinking.”
