Edinburgh consults on ‘QuietRoute’ designs for cycling and walking

The city of Edinburgh council is inviting the public to help shape improvements to some of Edinburgh’s dedicated routes for walking and cycling. 

QuietRoutes allow cyclists and pedestrians to explore the city while avoiding busy main roads

QuietRoutes are Edinburgh’s local walking and cycling routes, designed for users of all abilities to travel around the city while avoiding the busy main roads.

The QuietRoutes Network is being implemented across the city, with the aim of providing routes that are easy, safe and convenient to use by people of any level of cycle experience. It will also improve conditions for people walking. There are currently six QuietRoutes in Edinburgh.

The two consultations– ‘Cycling and Walking improvements on McDonald Road’ and ‘Cycling and Walking improvements between Niddrie, Moredun and Gilmerton’– seek feedback on proposed alterations to parts of QuietRoute 20 (Craigleith, Leith and Restalrig) and QuietRoute 61 (The Rosslyn Chapel Way).

Re-design

The consultations give residents the opportunity to express their views about initial designs for cycling and walking improvements, including cycle and pedestrian crossings, protected cycle ways and cycle and pedestrian ‘shared use’ pavements.

Transport convener, Councillor Lesley Hinds, said: “We’re committed to making it as easy as possible to travel by bike or on foot in the city and we want residents to help us improve our network of QuietRoutes through this consultation exercise.

“The council needs to understand and consider all the needs and views put forward regarding the re-design of the streets. We’ll use the comments and feedback to develop optimum designs that improve the routes for walking and cycling.”

Further consultations about proposed improvements to other QuietRoutes in the city will be carried out in the next few months.
