Ricardo Energy & Environment has received international recognition for its work compiling the UK’s National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory Agency on behalf of the government.
The environmental consultancy was named by the United Nations Task Force on Emission Inventories and Projections (TFEIP) as running the ‘most complete’ emissions inventory of around 40 operated globally.
NAEI is maintained by Ricardo Energy & Environment on behalf of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and gathers data on annual pollutant emissions from a variety of UK sectors, including waste, industry, agriculture, forestry and transport. Ricardo has run the database in various forms for over 20 years.
The emissions data is used to determine the effectiveness of policy, monitor progress against emissions targets, demonstrate compliance with international legislation and safeguard the health and well-being of the UK’s population and environment.
The data also informs UK government obligations, including its commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and is used by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe to estimate air pollutant emissions as part of monitoring the National Emission Ceilings Directive.
Ricardo Energy & Environment collects emissions data from the UK mainland, UK Crown Dependencies and overseas territories including Gibraltar, Bermuda and the Falkland Islands.
Sean Christiansen, Ricardo director for environmental evidence and data, said: “It is an honour to deliver the UK’s National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory, and we are delighted to see it recognised on the international stage. The award reflects the UK’s commitment to continuously enhancing the breadth and quality of our emissions data and builds on over two decades of service and collaboration with the UK government.”
