APC offers £30 million fund for zero emission technologies

Businesses are being invited to bid for up to £30 million in funding to develop technologies that will support a transition towards zero emission vehicles in the UK.

The funding is available through the government’s Advanced Propulsion Centre — and is being offered for projects which have a ‘proven technology concept’ and can demonstrate a ‘clear route to market’.

Funding is available in areas including energy storage and management, lightweight vehicle and powertrain structures, power electronics and alternative propulsion systems.

The competition for funding will open on 30 April, with applications to be submitted by 27 June. Projects must be led by a business working in partnership with others and must include an SME and a vehicle manufacturer or tier one supplier, APC has said. Businesses could attract up to 70% of their project costs through the funding scheme.

Set up by the coalition government in 2013, with around £1 billion in funding pledged over a ten-year period, the APC is a private limited company formed through a commitment between the government and automotive industry through the Automotive Council.

Projects to have been supported by APC include Dearman’s clean cold & power technology system, which offers lower NOx and CO2 emissions in the transport of cold goods, and a trial of hydrogen fuel cell technology with a range of partners including Suzuki, which has led to a number of zero emission scooters entering the Met Police fleet in London (see airqualitynews.com story).
