Octopus Energy and Uber have launched a new partnership aimed at accelerating the switch to electric vehicles and reducing the cost of clean transport for drivers.
The initiative offers 1,000 Uber drivers a free home EV charger worth £900, along with access to Octopus’s smart energy tariff, helping them save significantly on fuel costs.
Under the deal, the first 1,000 drivers to sign up for Intelligent Octopus Go, the supplier’s EV tariff, will receive an Ohme ePod home charger at no cost.
By charging at home during off-peak hours, drivers on the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff can save over £700 a year compared to operating a petrol or diesel car. Even those already using electric vehicles could save more than £400 annually compared to standard electricity tariffs.
In addition to home charging benefits, drivers will also receive an 8% discount on public charging through the Octopus Electroverse network, which includes access to more than 36,000 charging points across the UK. This offers flexibility for drivers to top up their battery on the go, while keeping energy costs down.
The initiative supports Uber’s commitment to fully electrify its fleet in London, where around 40% of Uber miles are electric, and Uber drivers are adopting EVs at five times the rate of the general public.
Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Product and Marketing Officer at Octopus Energy, said: ‘Uber drivers spend more time in their cars than anyone else, so no one knows better what’s good to drive and cheaper to run.
‘With over a third of Uber drivers already feeling the benefits of EVs, we’re making it even easier for more drivers to go electric. By offering a smart charging tech bundle that does the hard work for them, Uber drivers can get real savings, and offer customers a smoother ride and next level service.’
Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber UK, said: ‘Uber drivers are leading the way in switching to EVs, embracing cleaner vehicles much faster than the general public. But one of the biggest barriers they continue to face is access to affordable and reliable charging.
‘This partnership with Octopus helps tackle that, making it easier for more drivers to go electric across the UK.’
