It has been announced that this year’s Clean Air Day – the UK’s largest public engagement campaign on air pollution – will take place on Thursday 20th June.
The first such event took place in 2017 and it has grown exponentially since then. Last year, we published over 20 stories about Clean Air Day events the day itself.
This year, Global Action Plan – the organisers of Clean Air Day – launched Clean Air Night, a sister campaign which aimed to provide information to the public highlighting that wood burning is a significant source of air pollution.
Below is Global Action Plan’s message, explaining the aims of this year’s event:
How Clean Air Day is evolving
With a general election looming, it’s never been more important to demonstrate public support for measures to clean up our air. That’s why Clean Air Day is evolving.
This year, our campaign recognises the important role the public play in calling on politicians to tackle air pollution.
Cars and vans are the biggest source of toxic chemicals (NOx) in our air, but many people across the UK don’t feel like they have the choice to travel in cleaner and greener ways.
This Clean Air Day, we are urging the public to use their voices to call on politicians to:
• Make walking, cycling, and wheeling safer.
• Ensure everyone can access public transport that is reliable, affordable, and efficient.
We need politicians to take action to ensure that everyone has the option to travel in ways that are better for our health and the planet.
How you can get involved
It’s thanks to all the organisations, businesses and schools like yours that take part in Clean Air Day every year that it’s the success it is – we hope you will join us this year to help build and demonstrate public support for clean air.
We will be producing a petition that empowers the public to call on politicians to clean up the air. You can share this petition with your audiences to help ensure that everyone has the option to travel in ways that are better for our health and the planet.
We will be in touch nearer the time with a free communications pack to help you amplify the petition call. In the meantime, we will be producing and sharing our usual set of Clean Air Day resources to help you demonstrate your support for the Clean Air Day campaign – keep an eye out for our emails!
Here’s three more ways you can show your support for clean air:
• Use the Clean Air Day comms pack to talk about the harms of air pollution and share the solutions.
• Encourage your staff to check out the Clean Air Hub to learn more about air pollution and what actions they can take.
• Promote your organisation’s sustainable travel policy with your staff and on social media, or urge your team to walk, cycle or wheel this Clean Air Day.
