Retrofit system can convert diesel buses to electric in two weeks

Kleanbus has now completed its first re-powered vehicle build, representing a major step forward in net zero transition.

The technology involved is a first of its kind advanced modular electric platform, which can be adapted to suit different types of vehicles. While this is a complicated process which takes some time, once a system is developed for a particular model all future conversions of that type of bus can be completed in around a fortnight.

Already installed in an Optare Solare bus, Kleanbus is now focusing on accelerating prototype testing at its facility in England, while beginning pilot schemes with key bus fleet operators across the country.

Adding to the major selling points, the cost of retrofitting is around one-fifth the price of a new electric bus, which means local authorities and public transport providers stand to save in the medium and long run at a time when budgets for both councils and travel firms are stretched, which threatens to slow new zero transition.

‘Momentum is building rapidly with the completion of our ‘e-drivetrain in a box’ and the installation of this modular platform system into our first prototype. We are excited to accelerate our prototype testing programme, with pilot trials also starting this month with two bus operators,’ said Joe Tighe, Co-Founder and CEO of Kleanbus. ‘Our technology agnostic solution enables us to create an adaptable system that can convert a diesel bus into a state-of-the-art zero emission vehicle quickly and cost effectively.’

In addition to the modular system, Kleanbus also offers a more complete solutions which go some way to overcoming problems presented by the UK’s slow rate of electric vehicle infrastructure expansion, with financing and charging support available through the company.

Thanks, Martin – good to hear some encouraging news! Might the same tech nology be applied to convert diesel trains?
