Royal wedding coverage to be powered by ‘clean diesel’ fuel

Live television coverage of the royal wedding from Windsor tomorrow (18 May) will be powered using a ‘clean diesel’ alternative fuel, aimed at reducing harmful emissions of air pollutants.

Millions of people across the globe are expected to tune into the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, with more than 60,000 well-wishers expected to flock to Windsor to mark the occasion.

FTV will be using Shell GTL Fuel to power coverage of the Royal Wedding

Facilities company FTVS (Film & Television Services), which is providing the lighting and power generation facilities for media covering the event, has partnered with Certas Energy to use Shell GTL Fuel in its twin set generators which will be used on-site.

According to Certas, as part of the paraffinic family of fuels, Shell GTL Fuel has improved combustion properties inside standard diesel engines, helping to reduce harmful emissions such as Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM).

Having provided lighting and power facilities to the film and television industry for over 40 years, FTVS has used Shell GTL Fuel since May 2017.

Clean Fuels

Chris Pratt, technical director at FTVS, said: “Diesel powered generators can often be noisy and pump out strong-smelling fumes so when Certas Energy first told us about the performance benefits of Shell GTL Fuel we were keen to trial it.

“Our clients are increasingly specifying the use of cleaner, greener fuels and we have now used Shell GTL Fuel for a range of projects including BBC Springwatch, Big Brother and the Open at Royal Birkdale.

“Shell GTL Fuel has helped us demonstrate our commitment to operating sustainably and because it is a direct replacement for diesel, we haven’t had to make any modifications to our equipment or storage tanks. As a major supplier for special event media coverage, we’re thrilled to be bringing the benefits of Shell GTL Fuel to Windsor Castle where the thousands of people lining the streets to join in the celebrations will benefit from less fumes, noise and emissions from the generators.”
