Lancashire approves walking and cycling strategy

A strategy to increase walking and cycling has been approved by Lancashire county council’s cabinet.

The plan, dubbed ‘Actively Moving Forward’ aims to double the number of people cycling in the county and increase the amount that people walk by up to 10%.

Proposals will also seek to reduce levels of physical inactivity across Lancashire, Blackpool and Blackburn, so they fall below the national average. A 2028 target date has been set for these aims to be met across the county.

The strategy has been put together by Lancashire county council, in partnership with Blackpool council and Blackburn with Darwen council, following a consultation residents and other organisations, which took place last year.

‘Crucial’

County Councillor Keith Iddon, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “It’s crucial we do all we can to encourage people to walk and cycle and this strategy is a key part of our plans.

“It sets out how we can encourage cycling and walking to be people’s preferred method of getting around, whether it’s to and from work and school, or for leisure.

“The strategy will help us reduce congestion and improve air quality, improve physical activity levels, improve access to jobs and support economic growth across the county.”

Documents published ahead of a meeting to consider the plans earlier this month suggests that the strategy represents the ‘first stage’ in positioning the county for future funding opportunities for infrastructure and activities to support cycling and walking.

The plans will now need to be approved by Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen councils.
