Moto install over £1m of solar across 13 motorway sites

Motorway services chain, Moto Hospitality have completed a £1.1m project that has seen major solar panel installations at 13 of their sites.

The panels, installed by renewable energy specialist Geo Green Power have an estimated output of 1,240MWh a year.

The new systems range in size from 35kWp to 402kWp (kilowatt peak). Geo Green Power will also provide a 5-year maintenance contract as part of the deal.

The panels have been installed at Winchester North, Wetherby, Grantham, Pease Pottage, Donnington Park, Stirling, Trowell, Woolley Edge Southbound, Thurrock, Southwaite, Woolley Edge Northbound, Cherwell Valley and Rugby – pictured above – which has the largest install of 402kWp.

The installations are already having an impact on emissions and are expected to reduce emissions by around 311 tonnes of CO2 annually.

In addition to their solar installations, Moto are committed to growing their EV charging offer, having recently hit the milestone of 1,000 charging sites across its network of service stations and generating energy onsite to access additional capacity beyond the grid.

It is the leading provider of ultra-rapid EV charging points across the UK motorway network and aims to have over 2,000 chargers on its network by 2030.

Moto’s 68 UK sites are visited by more than 120 million visitors each year.

Jess Lockwood, Property Director at Moto Hospitality, said: ‘At Moto, we recognise the critical role we play in driving the UK towards a more environmentally friendly and net zero future. A key element of this is helping the motorway network embrace green energy and renewable solutions. That’s why we chose Geo Green Power – a knowledgeable and trusted expert in the field – to carry out this solar installation across 13 of our sites. We’re excited to see the positive impact these systems will have and have already started expanding them to more of our locations starting with Exeter and Sawtry.’

James Cunningham, Managing Director of Geo Green Power, added: ‘We’re delighted to be working with Moto Hospitality on their journey to net zero. Our mission extends beyond just helping Moto reduce their emissions; we aim to inspire other businesses to evaluate their environmental footprint and adopt sustainable practices to create a greener future for everyone.’
