Music, culture and climate campaigning will come together at Southbank Centre this weekend as artists, activists and community groups highlight the unequal impact of air pollution.
LIVE + BREATHE will take place on Sunday 30th August, bringing people from across London together for a free programme focused on clean air and environmental justice.
The event, hosted by artist, musician and LIVE + BREATHE founder Love Ssega, will feature two programmes from 2pm at the Royal Festival Hall.
The Climate Futures Marketplace in the Clore Ballroom will bring together campaigners, artists, students and community organisations to explore how creative projects can support climate action.
Exhibitors and projects will include work from London College of Communication’s Design School, Roll ’N Stroll, NEON Elevate, Jaffar Aly, Studio Long, Sounds Right, EarthPercent and Hard Art Collective. The marketplace will also feature projects from the Mayor of London’s No Extra Time, Philharmonia Orchestra, Carspreading and Cool Off in Culture.
Meanwhile, Sounds of Solidarity on the Riverside Terrace will celebrate Black music and culture from Southwark and Lambeth, with performances and DJ sets highlighting communities disproportionately affected by poor air quality.
The line-up includes Shabba Party & Friends, featuring YNG CPTN, TryB, Gin and Janelle Wynter, as well as Mya Mehmi of Pxssy Palace. Rotation will bring funk, soul and disco to the event, featuring Femi Fem, while South London collective Zaiah Arts will also perform.
Ssega said bringing LIVE + BREATHE to Southbank Centre was a natural fit for the campaign: ‘We want to bring clean air and environmental justice into cultural spaces where people can see it, talk about it and get involved,” he said.
‘Music and culture give us a way to bring communities together and show that climate action can be bold, creative and something we can all take part in.’
LIVE + BREATHE was founded by Ssega in 2022 and focuses on air quality and environmental justice in Lambeth and Southwark. The campaign uses art, music, sport and creativity to raise awareness of air pollution as a racial and social justice issue.
Both events are free and open to all ages, with no ticket required. Under-12s must be accompanied by an adult.
