Solar installations hit 15-year high as Iran war drags on

New government data shows that 27,000 solar installations were completed across the UK in March 2026 – the highest monthly figure since 2012. The surge brings the total number of solar installations nationwide to more than two million for the first time.

The increase was driven mainly by rooftop solar, with two-thirds of new installations being panels fitted to homes. Overall solar capacity rose by 11.7% over the past year, adding 2.3 GW of electricity generation to the national grid.

The milestone follows government action to speed up investment in solar power across homes, schools and communities. Recent policy steps include:

  • Approving Springwell Solar Farm, the largest power-producing solar farm in UK history
  • Accelerating the rollout of low-cost ‘plug-in’ solar panels for balconies and outdoor spaces, expected to be available in shops within months
  • Requiring solar panels to be fitted as standard on new homes in England

The growth in solar capacity comes alongside a new record for solar generation. Data from the National Energy System Operator shows that solar output surpassed 15 GW for the first time on Britain’s electricity system this month.

Officials said the expansion of homegrown renewable power would help protect households and businesses from price shocks in international fossil fuel markets, following the outbreak of war in Iran. The government has framed the transition to clean energy as part of its wider mission to reduce Britain’s exposure to volatile gas prices.

The March figures represent the strongest monthly deployment of solar in over a decade, with rooftop installations accounting for the majority of the growth. Industry observers expect further increases as new policies take effect and technology costs continue to fall.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: ‘The numbers speak for themselves – the highest monthly installation of solar in over a decade, rising capacity and more than 2 million solar installations now powering homes across Britain.

‘This is our clean energy mission in action – helping families weather global energy shocks, bringing bills down, and getting Britain off the fossil fuel rollercoaster.’
