New consultation will consider the future of the UK’s transport
A government consultation will consider how new technologies will transform how we travel over the next decade.
Among the proposals being considered are plans for a robust electric vehicle charge point network that will allow everyone to make the switch to electric.
These proposals would support even more charge points along motorways, streets and at popular destinations.
The government has also said that as an ‘independent nation’ the UK will implement tougher environmental standards for new vehicles.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: ‘This is a hugely exciting time for transport in the UK.
‘On our roads, EVs are set to become the norm within the decade, on our seas autonomous and remotely operated vessels will increase efficiency and improve safety, and in our skies, drones and novel aircraft will transform the way people and goods move around.
‘Supporting these innovations will not only ensure high standards for consumers but also create a research-friendly environment so we can continue being world leaders in transport. We will create a safer, greener transport system that attracts investment and supports skilled jobs across the country.’
The consultation will also look at how a flexible legislative and regulatory framework could bring new aviation technology to market in a safe, secure and sustainable way.
This will create new opportunities in aviation, such as supporting the routine use of drones for deliveries.
In the maritime industry, the government is also looking to create a comprehensive regulatory framework to ensure that autonomous and remotely operated vessels can be operated safely in UK waters.
In related news, the UK government has launched the first-ever Hydrogen Strategy.
Thinking about the future of mobility in each sector it includes, is fundamental. It is right to start changing from cars and public transports, by improving EV charging points along motorways, streets and at popular destinations, because they are the most common means of transport that people use every day. But the need of creating and offering sustainable opportunities also for the aviation and maritime sectors is evident. There is the necessity to change their environmental impact and the Hydrogen Strategy launched by the Government can be a great opportunity to travel safely and in a sustainable way in each sector of mobility.
How many terra-watts of extra energy is provided for these charge points? I doubt construction has begun for the sustainable energy required.
