Environmental campaign group Mums for Lungs has teamed up with a researcher from Royal Holloway University to launch a new animated film warning of the hidden health dangers of wood-burning stoves.
The animation, created with Dr Mathy Sannasi and animation studio Nifty Fox Creative, aims to raise awareness of the invisible pollution released when wood and solid fuels are burned, and what can be done about it.
While summer may seem an odd time to promote the message, the campaigners point out that this is precisely when many people start thinking about installing a stove before winter sets in.
Research presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress last year found that using wood-burning stoves at home is linked to a faster decline in lung function, with emissions from domestic wood burning in the UK almost doubling between 2009 and 2023. Domestic solid fuel now accounts for 20% of harmful PM2.5 pollution five times the share from road traffic exhaust.
Dr Sannasi won a Storytelling for Impact funding competition to produce the film, which was brought to life by Nifty Fox Creative using a story-driven animated format to communicate complex research in an accessible way
