Delegate bookings now open for the 2022 Northern Air Quality Conference

Delegate bookings are now open for the Northern Air Quality Conference. The event will be held at the Midland Hotel Manchester on Wednesday 25th May 2022.

As the levels of toxic air being registered in our towns and cities increase and the numbers of deaths which are attributed to air pollution grow, there is a clear and perceptual change in mindset with regard to delivering policies that offer quantifiable solutions across health, energy, urban design, and transport.

The National Air Quality News Conference explores some of the issues and the possible solutions to the increasing levels of toxic air in our communities.

The conference agenda includes presentations from many sector leading specialists including:

  1. Dr. Maria Neira, Director of the Department of Public Health and Environment at the World Health Organisation (WHO)
In September 2021, the WHO published new guidelines for particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution. To explain why this was necessary, Dr. Maria Neira from WHO will be joining us at the conference to discuss some of global air pollution issue.

2. Polly Billington, Chief Executive at UK100.

Polly is the Chief Executive of UK100, a network of highly ambitious local government leaders, which seeks to devise and implement plans for the transition to clean energy that are ambitious, cost-effective and take the public and businesses with them.

3. Sarah Woolnough, Chief Executive of the British Lung Foundation and Asthma UK.
Air pollution is estimated to contribute to over 40,000 premature deaths in the UK every single year and it is also linked to increased rates of asthma, lung disease and COPD. In her presentation, Sarah will explain why air pollution is a public health crisis.

The conference will also include a bespoke exhibition with a variety of organisations promoting and displaying their innovative products and services that are key to the sector.

4. Prof. Alastair Lewis, Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of York
The Atmospheric Chemistry group studies gas and aerosol phase processes in the atmosphere using experimental and modeling approaches. The research focuses on air pollution and its environmental impacts.

5. A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
Earlier this year, Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham announced that the Greater Manchester Clean Air Zone will be delayed. A spokesperson from the combined authority will be joining us to discuss why this decision was made and what it means for Manchester’s air quality.

6. A spokesperson from the Joint Air Quality Unit.
The Joint Air Quality Unit (JAQU) is charged with delivering HM Government’s legal and policy commitments to improve air quality by reducing levels of NO2 pollution. A spokesperson will be joining us at the conference to discuss the government’s plans to improve air quality.

7. Clean Air Zone panel discussion
A spokesperson from three different councils who are all in the process of implementing a Clean Air Zone will also be joining us to answer questions from the audience.
