Maldon council sets out air quality action plan

Maldon District Council has developed a new five-year plan to improve air quality in the district.

The Air Quality Action Plan 2020-2025 that was approved by councillors last week (July 2) sets out a number of initiatives to improve air quality. 

These include cleaner transport, smart delivery bays, clean air walking and cycling routes and raising public awareness of the health issues associated with exposure to air pollution. 

The plan will also involve partnerships with Essex County Council, public transport providers, local schools and businesses. 

According to Maldon council, they are currently meeting all the National Air Quality Strategy objectives, other than that for nitrogen in one area. However, they have said that continuing to mitigate pollution is still a priority as any level of pollution is a health concern. 

Leader of the Council, Cllr Adrian Fluker, said ‘The health of the people of the District is paramount and it is vital that the Council acts to improve air quality where it is reduced.

‘I am therefore delighted that this Air Quality Action Plan is being taken forward. One area being examined is transport.

‘For example, we can look at it improving pavement and road designs for pedestrians and cyclists, so they have extra space. Our aim is to make sustainable transport as safe as possible for everyone to enjoy.’
