Norwegian operator orders two sail powered cargo carriers

Norwegian shipowner Berge Rederi have announced they will be fitting two newbuild cargo carriers with rotor sails provided by Norsepower, a leading innovator in this in modern sail technology, with the first of the ships is expected to be delivered by the end of this year. 

The sails use small amount of electric power to rotate cylinder-shaped rotors which, together with wind, generates powerful thrust – saving fuel and reducing emissions.


At 130m, the ships are designed to operate with maximum efficiency and minimal environmental impact, featuring battery packs and shaft generators, enabling short-distance hybrid-electric operation.

The vessels will be equipped with two fixed 24m Norsepower Rotor Sails, specifically optimised for harsh conditions such as snow, ice, rain, and the high winds often encountered along the Northern Sea routes.

In fact, the high wind conditions that prevail along the Norwegian coast, will be a benefit to the vessels which have been proved to perform exceptionally well in such conditions.
